The Thin Hex Line
The Valkyries
Description
With their powers, the valkyries created a sprawling city within a mountain on the southern continent of Skao. It had once been the burrow of an enormous monster and comprises an elaborate tunnel system. They are run solely by Tyr, who provides strong leadership, purpose, and justice.
History
The Valkyrie Program is the brain child of Dr. Keira Schreider. While she may not have been the first to delve into the taboo of forced evolution, and genetic engineering, she is perhaps the perfecter of the trade. The idea for the program came when she saw the results of the first conflict between humans and the Eos. The humans who had survived the slaughter had quickly evolved into Eos. They appeared mindless and attacked anyone that was not an eos. When there was nothing left for them to attack, they turned on each other. Devouring one another until only one of them was left.
They were unable to capture this first human turned eos, however, that did not stop Schreider from gathering more specimens. She studied for years with a dedicated team of scientists. As if the strain on her marriage was not enough as is, when she finally made a break through and realized she could manipulate the Eos DNA to suit her needs, she started genetically splicing the DNA with donated human eggs.
The Order would soon stop the studies. Under the watchful eyes of the Human Federation who looked down upon such genetic engineering, the Order publicly announced the program was coming to a grinding halt and funding was being cut. This satisfied the Federation who stepped away. The Order, on the other hand, knowing the knowledge that could be gained upon success of this program, allowed it to continue in secret.
Schreider already had success with the growth of a human-eos hybrid even if it only lasted for a night. This was a step in the right direction for the program. Upon being moved to a more discrete bunker in a planet yet to be colonized, Schreider's marriage came to an end. Her husband leaving her with their young children. With a lack of eggs to use for studying, Schreider donated her own eggs, finding them to be more useful now than they ever were prior to this program.
The first several did not survive. In fact, hundreds would never breathe air. Hundreds would never see their first month of life. There was a delicate balance required to keep the Eos genes from taking over entirely. When Schreider and her team figured out the balance, the first litter of valkyries had been born.
Twelve total. They went through similar training to Hunters to turn them into soldiers. The Eos themselves were a growing threat, and the Order had a feeling the valkyries could lead them into victory against the Eos. Training was adjusted to further push them and make them evolve on the spot. They were subjected to harsh treatment and environments, but their growth was rapid and their intelligence meant they knew why. Oddly enough, every Valkyrie accepted their fate, knowing there was something better at the end of the tunnel.
Unfortunately, only five of these valkyries would survive. They prototyped the Valkyrie armor and weapons, helped perfect them and show just what would happen when worn by a Valkyrie. Ballistic protection, slashing and stabbing protection. Complete with an exo-skeleton, pressurized system, solar powered battery, gas mask attachments, on board oxygen supply, and a helmet with moving jaws to allow them to consume their kills all without removing their armor. In fact, the armor was built in such a way, a Valkyrie could not remove the armor themselves. They needed a second pair of hands. A latch on the back had to be pulled which would de-pressurize the suit, opening the locks. The armor was designed to fold open so it could remain in one piece. This meant the valkyries could jump in and out of the armor as they needed to, though they are not supposed to ever remove the armor when in the presence of anyone not a Valkyrie.
What had been discovered was the first five Valkyries in the armor, returned after a year to show their bodies had grown into the armor. Their repeated evolution while fighting the Eos caused their bodies to stretch out and consume the very armor they wore for protection. This caused the armor itself to evolve alongside them turning the suit into a weapon not unlike their bodies.
This first litter of Valkyries were sent back out to Skao to establish a base for future valkyries to gather to fight the eos. Contact was soon lost and the first litter was presumed dead. The second litter, consisting of eight valkyries, were sent out to find the base at Skao and what happened to the first litter.
They too lost contact with Avant-Garde, perhaps due to the distance. They found no base on Skao and no sign of the first pack. Their travels landed them with the knowledge of ancient artifacts that could possibly help fight the eos, but the pieces needed to be found.
