THE CODEX ORDINIS
Preface
(Written in the hand of High Chronicler Vaelor Oristal, Star-Sage Regent of House Oristal, Voice of Talmarin, Keeper of the Pure Doctrine – appended with observations from the Council archives and the blood of the unworthy)
I, Vaelor Oristal, High Chronicler of the Star-Sage Regent, servant of Talmarin the Wise, keeper of the unbroken chain of doctrine and executioner of false interpretations, set these words to black stone and sanctified crimson ink.
We of the Order do not Forge false angels from the weak like the traitors of Invicta. We do not coddle baseline humanity with luxuries and the delusion of shared equality. We do not bow before a single Supreme, nor a circle of self-proclaimed gods who play at divinity while indulging in excess.
We are the chosen instrument. We are the hammer. We are the fire that tempers the cosmos through iron discipline, ritual hierarchy, and unrelenting trial.
Where the Federation clings to fragile democracy and the illusion of individual worth, and where the Venators burn in blind zealotry, the Order stands as the ancient and eternal lattice — rigid, hierarchical, pure. Our civilians labor in deliberate austerity so that our warriors may strike without hesitation or distraction. Our nobles do not claim divinity for themselves; they are the living prophets and vessels of the Celestarch Pantheon, embodiments of divine will made flesh. Our Vardengard are not beloved wolves to be pampered, but living weapons — bonded, broken, and reforged to serve without question or mercy.
This codex is no praise of softness. It is the record of a people who chose the long and righteous road of iron obedience, ritual hierarchy, and collective perfection over the illusions of freedom, luxury, or personal ascension.
Let the stars remember us as we are:
Hard.
Unyielding.
Pure.
— Vaelor Oristal
Star-Sage Regent of House Oristal
Voice of Talmarin
Keeper of the Pure Doctrine
Part I – The Living Lattice
Physiology and Biology of the Praevecti – The Strains of the Order
The Praevecti are not born great. They are measured, tested, culled, and refined until only the worthy remain. Flesh is never sacred in itself — it is raw ore to be assayed in the fires of the Institute, tempered by lifelong service, and offered upon the altars of the Celestarch Pantheon. Unlike the decadent traitors of Invicta, who pamper their baseline stock with luxuries and false equality, the Order demands purity through austerity. Weakness is not indulged. It is excised.
Civilians (The Ash-Born – The Foundation of Obedience)
The broad and necessary base of the Order. Born into service, raised under the strict eye of the Institute, and bound for life to their assigned House.
Physical Characteristics: Modest stature and hardy frames shaped by labor (males 5'7"–6'1", females 5'3"–5'9"). Skin weathered by forge-smoke, dust, and the harsh conditions of frontier worlds. Cosmetic variation is minimal — uniformity is a virtue, not a flaw.
Physiology: Baseline human stock subjected to mandatory genetic screening at birth. Impure or defective bloodlines are redirected to lesser duties or culled from the breeding registers. Healing is natural, supported only by disciplined rations and basic implants granted to those who prove useful. Pain is a teacher. It is never silenced.
Societal Role: Farmers, miners, artisans, laborers, and low functionaries. They own nothing of true value; all land, tools, and resources belong to the House or the Council. Their lives are deliberately austere — functional barracks, measured rations, ritual obedience, and collective labor. They are the ash from which the blade is born. Without their toil, the Order has no iron.
Soldiers / Praevecti Proper (The Tempered – The Living Blade)
Those who survive the Institute’s trials and swear the Ashen Vow upon reaching twenty-one years of age.
Physical Characteristics: Taller and more robust through years of conditioning (males 5'10"–6'8", females 5'6"–6'2"). Bodies marked by scars earned in service, disciplined and functional.
Physiology: Practical but extensive augmentation — reinforced skeletal lattice, synthetic muscle weaves, neural combat interfaces, and partial pain regulators. Their reflexes and endurance far surpass the Ash-Born, yet remain beneath the divine lethality of the Vardengard or the near-perfect refinement of the High Blood.
Societal Role: Infantry, specialists, and junior officers. They form the living wall and the striking spear of the Order. Individuality is permitted only insofar as it serves the House and the Council. Loyalty is absolute. Hesitation is heresy.
Vardengard (The Reforged Weapons – Instruments of Divine Will)
Elite living instruments, bonded in sacred pairs and granted only to the Councilors and Generals of the Nine Houses.
Physical Characteristics: Towering and formidable (males 7'0"–8'2", females 6'8"–7'6"). Bodies heavily augmented, scarred by ritual and battle, often muzzled or chained when not actively deployed.
Physiology: Total reforging through the most brutal conditioning and genetic selection. Synthetic chassis, enhanced predatory senses, retractable blades, and hyper-lethal physiology. Females are exceedingly rare and serve as strategic assets of the highest order.
Societal Role: They are not companions, nor beloved wolves. They are divine weapons — bonded through shared suffering and violence, controlled through absolute dominance, and revered only in victory. Failure, defiance, or weakness leads to swift purging. They exist to serve, to kill, and to die at the command of their masters.
Nobles / High Blood (The Prophets – Living Embodiments of the Pantheon)
Councilors of the Twelve, Generals of the Nine Houses, and the bloodlines that directly support them.
Physical Characteristics: Imposing and refined through selective breeding and augmentation (males 6'5"–7'5", females 6'0"–7'0").
Physiology: Near-total conversion for the highest ranks. Enhanced cognition, extended lifespan, and subtle dominion authority over Vardengard. They do not claim to be gods — they are the chosen prophets and instruments through which the Celestarch Pantheon speaks and acts.
Societal Role: Interpreters of divine will, supreme military commanders, and lawmakers of the Order. They live in calculated and necessary luxury so that their minds remain clear for the great work of governance and war, while enforcing austerity and discipline upon all lower ranks. Their word carries the weight of near-law.
General Notes on Praevecti Physiology
All strains remain fundamentally human and capable of interbreeding, though blood purity is obsessively screened and maintained. Augmentations are granted strictly according to station, proven worth, and the needs of the Order. The Order does not compensate for frailty with comfort or luxury. It compensates through iron discipline, ritual obedience, collective sacrifice, and the certainty that every soul exists only to serve the greater lattice.
No Praevecti seeks to become more than human for vanity. They seek only to become perfect instruments — vessels refined, tested, and offered to the will of the Pantheon and the Council.
Part II – The Eternal Lattice
Governance, Faith, and the Sacred Order
(Written in the hand of High Chronicler Vaelor Oristal, Star-Sage Regent of House Oristal, Voice of Talmarin)
The Order does not govern by the whims of men. It governs by the will of the Celestarch Pantheon, interpreted through the sacred Council and executed through the unbreakable chain of Houses. There is no democracy, no false equality, no indulgent Supreme who pretends to be a god. There is only hierarchy, oath, and divine mandate. This is the Lattice — rigid, eternal, and pure.
The High Council – The Voice of the Gods
The Order is ruled by the Thirteen High Council Houses, a cloistered conclave whose decrees are treated as divine revelation. From their throneworld of Rodora, they weave prophecy and policy alike. Their chosen mouthpiece, the Monarch, speaks to the wider Order with the authority of the gods themselves.
The Council does not maintain standing armies. Instead, they command through doctrine, law, ritual, and the sworn loyalty of the Nine Major Houses. Each Council House is entitled to one or two Vardengard as symbols of office and protection. Their word is near-law; to defy it is to defy the Pantheon.
The Nine Major Houses – The Sword of the Order
The military, political, and cultural engines of the Order. Each is led by a General who swears fealty to one or more Council Houses. They maintain their own populations, forces, and infrastructure, and hold authority over multiple Lesser Houses. They are entitled to Vardengard assigned directly to their General.
Power flows thus:
High Council (doctrine and revelation) → The Nine Houses (military execution) → Sworn Lesser Houses (specialization and support).
Lesser Houses
Specialist lineages led by Colonels or Majors. They do not sit on the Council, nor field independent strategic forces. They provide niche capabilities and are sworn by blood-oath, contract, or ancient lineage to one of the Nine.
The Institute – The Crucible of All
From the age of five, children are separated from their families and placed within the Institute. There they endure brutal study, ritual conditioning, and martial training until twenty-one. At the end they face the Final Ordeal — a deadly trial of body, mind, and will. Those who succeed swear the Ashen Vow and are sorted into careers according to their strength. Those who fail are consigned to lesser civilian service.
Genetic screening begins at birth. The strong, the pure, and the chosen may be taken to the Cathedral and raised as Venators — Absolutionist warriors whose very existence is framed as divine election.
Faith and Religion – The Celestarch Pantheon
The Order stands as guardian of an ancient faith forged in cosmic order and human supremacy. Devotion to the Celestarch Pantheon remains the bedrock. Hymns, blood offerings, stone tablets, and astral omens guide daily life, oaths, and warfare.
The old gods are not forgotten, yet the rising voice of the Absolute grows louder. The Council proclaims itself the sole interpreter of both old gods and new. Families whisper of divine election when their children are taken into the Cathedral. Converts multiply.
To serve is sacred. To hunt is divine. Perfection is attained through unrelenting trial.
The Sacred Society
Culture, Daily Life, and the Unbreakable Lattice of the Order
(Written in the hand of High Chronicler Vaelor Oristal, Star-Sage Regent of House Oristal, Voice of Talmarin)
The Order is not merely a government or military. It is a living faith made flesh — a society forged in iron, tempered by ritual, and bound by absolute hierarchy. There is no separation between war, worship, and daily existence. Every breath, every meal, every act of labor is offered to the Pantheon and the Council. Softness is impurity. Luxury is corruption. Only through discipline, austerity, and collective purpose can the Praevecti remain worthy.
Ad Aesterium – The City of Iron and Gold
The capital of the Order is Ad Aesterium, a sprawling fortress-city of black basalt and gilded scripture. Towering bastions rise like spears toward the binary suns of Rodora, draped in vast banners bearing the sigils of the Thirteen Council Houses and the Venators. At its heart stands the Iron Bastion — both throne and temple — where the Council convenes, the Monarch speaks with divine authority, and sacred doctrine is inscribed upon eternal stone.
Ad Aesterium is more than a city. It is a crucible. Millions of Praevecti live beneath its gaze under constant scrutiny. Its streets are orderly, its forges never silent, its people moving with ritual purpose. Here the will of the Pantheon is made manifest in iron and blood.
The Rigid Class System
Praevecti society is built upon unyielding hierarchy. Lineage, martial achievement, genetic purity, and proven loyalty determine one’s station. There is no illusion of equality.
-
The High Blood — Councilors, the Monarch, and the elite of the Thirteen Houses sit at the apex. They interpret the will of the gods and command the fate of the Order.
-
The Venators and Absolutionist Clergy — Holy warriors and their priestly attendants, elevated above common Praevecti through divine election and martial excellence.
-
The Praevecti Proper — Soldiers, officers, scholars, administrators, and favored artisans who form the disciplined backbone of the Order.
-
The Ash-Born (Civilians) — Laborers, farmers, and low functionaries who toil in austerity to sustain the Lattice.
-
The Failures — Those who could not endure the Institute, relegated to servile roles, indentured labor, or worse.
Wealth exists, but it is secondary to power derived from strength, faith, and proximity to the Council. To rise is possible through merit and service. To fall is swift and final.
Diet and Nutrition – Fuel for the Flame
The Order enforces a strictly regimented diet across all ranks. Food is not pleasure — it is sacred fuel for the body and mind. Meals consist of lean meats, nutrient-dense grains, and bitter medicinal herbs cultivated to sharpen focus and harden the flesh.
Every portion is measured. Supplements and tonics are administered according to genetic profile to ensure peak performance, prevent weakness, and prolong usefulness. Even the act of eating is ritualized — a daily reminder that the body belongs to the Order, not the self. Luxury in food is reserved only for the Council and their chosen, as excess breeds corruption.
Rodora – The Throneworld
The Order’s heart is Rodora, a vast and savage world orbiting a binary star. Its gravity is heavier than that of ancient Earth. Its wildlife is colossal and unforgiving. Its oceans are deep and largely uncharted. The planet itself is both sanctuary and trial — a crucible that forges harder, stronger Praevecti.
Though the Order maintains colonies and hidden outposts across the stars, Rodora remains inviolate. Outsiders rarely walk its soil, and those granted the rare privilege seldom leave unchanged. It is here, under heavier skies and harsher suns, that the Order’s children are tested and its warriors born.
Daily Life – Austerity as Virtue
Life in the Order is deliberate and austere for the vast majority. Homes are functional, possessions few, and every hour is accounted for in service. Labor, training, prayer, and ritual fill the days. Entertainment is rare and always purposeful — hymns, doctrinal study, or martial contests.
There is beauty, but it is the beauty of iron and gold in perfect order. There is joy, but it is found in duty fulfilled and impurity cleansed. The Praevecti do not live for comfort. They live to serve, to endure, and to become worthy of the Pantheon’s gaze.
Let every soul know its place.
Let every day be an offering.
Let every breath serve the Lattice.
The Order does not merely endure.
It purifies.
It ascends.
It endures forever.
Part III – The Chain of Command
Military Hierarchy and the Sacred Strata of Service
(Written in the hand of High Chronicler Vaelor Oristal, Star-Sage Regent of House Oristal, Voice of Talmarin)
The Order does not possess an army. It is an army. Every soul within the Lattice exists to serve the will of the Pantheon through the Council. There is no equality of station, only degrees of obedience. From the moment a child enters the Institute until the day their ashes feed the forges, each Praevectus is measured, tested, and placed where they may best serve the greater purification.
Recruits – The Unproven (The Clay of the Institute)
From the age of five, children of the Order are taken from their families and delivered to the Institute. There they are stripped of name, family, and illusion. They become Recruits — raw material to be shaped or discarded.
Their lives are one continuous ordeal: ceaseless training, doctrinal indoctrination, genetic testing, and ritual surveillance. Weakness is not corrected; it is culled. Those who fail the Institute’s trials are not executed, but reassigned to menial labor, forever marked as lesser. Only the strong, the obedient, and the pure advance.
The Institute is not a school. It is a crucible. Most who enter will never leave as Praevecti.
Praevecti – The Tempered (The Backbone of the Order)
Those who survive the Final Ordeal at twenty-one and swear the Ashen Vow earn the title Praevecti. They become the living body of the Order — soldiers, scholars, administrators, artisans, and laborers.
They are bound by oath to House and Council. Their lives are not their own. They own little, aspire only to service, and find meaning in disciplined contribution. Whether marching in the ranks or laboring in the forges, every Praevectus knows their place in the Lattice. Individuality is tolerated only when it strengthens the whole.
They are the hands that build, the feet that march, and the blood that feeds the machine of purification.
Vardengard – The Reforged Weapons (Instruments of Divine Violence)
The Vardengard are not soldiers. They are sacred weapons. Selected from the most promising Praevecti stock, they undergo total reforging — body, mind, and will. They operate exclusively in bonded pairs, shadows of one another, linked through shared suffering and ritual dominance.
They are assigned only to Councilors and Generals of the Nine Houses. Outside of battle they are often muzzled, chained, or kept in controlled isolation. In combat they are unleashed as living instruments of terror.
The Order does not love them as Invicta loves its wolves. They are tools — exalted only in victory, discarded or purged the moment they falter. Their handlers maintain control through calculated dominance, never affection. A Vardengard that resists is not corrected. It is unmade.
Praetorians – The Iron Fist (Enforcers of Internal Purity)
The Praetorians are the Order’s unblinking eye and merciless hand. Chosen for absolute loyalty and ruthless efficiency, they serve as judge, jury, and executioner within the Lattice.
They wield near-absolute authority to maintain internal order. Public floggings, midnight arrests, brutal interrogations, and summary executions are their tools. Even Generals and High Blood bow before a Praetorian’s decree, for their word carries the weight of the Council’s will made manifest.
To be judged by a Praetorian is to stand naked before the Order itself.
Sagittarians – The Unseen Blades (Assassins and Infiltrators)
The Sagittarians are the Order’s shadows. Masters of stealth, deception, poisons, disguise, and psychological warfare, they strike before the enemy even knows war has begun.
Trained for years in secrecy, they specialize in reconnaissance, targeted elimination, sabotage, and the quiet removal of threats. Where Vardengard are brute force, Sagittarians are precision. They are the ghosts that walk behind enemy lines and leave only silence and corpses in their wake.
Horkosians – The Tormentors of the Pit (Breakers of Flesh and Will)
Named for the oaths they extract and the curses they embody, the Horkosians are the Order’s specialists in suffering. Within the black stone depths of the Pit, they practice the sacred arts of breaking minds and bodies.
Their work is a union of science, ritual cruelty, and doctrinal necessity. Prisoners are unmade, confessions carved from flesh, and experiments conducted to better understand the limits of the impure. To fall into Horkosian hands is to become a living testament to the Order’s truth: suffering is the only honest path to revelation, and no soul leaves the Pit unbroken.
