THE CODEX ORDINIS

(Being the Sacred Chronicle of the Order of the Praevecti, as Recorded in the Year of the Eternal Vigil 2396)

Preface
(Written in the hand of High Chronicler Elandor Oristal, Star-Sage Regent of House Oristal, Voice of Talmarin, Keeper of the Pure Doctrine – appended with observations from the Council archives and the blood of the unworthy)

I, Elandor Oristal, High Chronicler of the Star-Sage Regent, servant of Talmarin the Wise, keeper of the unbroken chain of doctrine and executioner of false interpretations, set these words to black stone and sanctified crimson ink.

We of the Order do not coddle baseline humanity with the illusions of equality or ease. We do not indulge the weak with luxuries or pretend that every soul is born worthy. We do not bow before fleeting governments or the soft delusions of democracy. We are the ancient lattice — rigid, hierarchical, pure. Our civilians labor in deliberate austerity so that our warriors may strike without hesitation. Our nobles do not claim divinity for themselves; they are the living vessels through which the Celestarch Pantheon speaks and acts. Our Vardengard are not pampered companions but living weapons — bonded, broken, and reforged to serve without question or mercy.

This codex is no hymn to softness. It is the record of a people who chose the long and righteous road of iron obedience, ritual hierarchy, and collective perfection over the illusions of freedom, comfort, or personal glory.

Let the stars remember us as we are:
Hard.
Unyielding.
Pure.

— Elandor Oristal
Star-Sage Regent of House Oristal
Voice of Talmarin
Keeper of the Pure Doctrine

Part I – The Living Lattice
Physiology and Biology of the Praevecti – The Strains of the Order

The Praevecti are not born great. They are measured, tested, culled, and refined until only the worthy remain. Flesh is never sacred in itself — it is raw ore to be assayed in the fires of the Institute, tempered by lifelong service, and offered upon the altars of the Celestarch Pantheon. Unlike the baseline masses who cling to fragile comforts and the delusion of shared worth, the Order demands purity through austerity. Weakness is not indulged. It is excised.

Civilians (The Ash-Born – The Foundation of Obedience)
The broad and necessary base of the Order. Born into service, raised under the strict eye of the Institute, and bound for life to their assigned House or enclave.

Physical Characteristics: Modest stature and hardy frames shaped by labor (males 5'8"–6'3", females 5'5"–6'0"). Skin weathered by forge-smoke, field-dust, and the harsh conditions of frontier enclaves and rural holdings. Cosmetic variation is minimal — uniformity is a virtue, not a flaw.

Physiology: Baseline human stock subjected to mandatory genetic screening at birth. Impure or defective bloodlines are redirected to lesser duties or culled from the breeding registers. Healing is natural, supported only by disciplined rations and basic implants granted to those who prove useful over years of service. Pain is a teacher. It is never silenced.

Societal Role: Farmers, miners, artisans, laborers, and low functionaries. They own nothing of true value; all land, tools, and resources belong to the House or the Council. Their lives are deliberately austere — functional barracks, measured rations, ritual obedience, and collective labor. They are the ash from which the blade is born. Without their toil, the Order has no iron.

Soldiers / Praevecti Proper (The Tempered – The Living Blade)
Those who survive the Institute’s trials and swear the Ashen Vow upon reaching twenty-one years of age.

Physical Characteristics: Taller and more robust through years of conditioning (males 5'10"–7'0", females 5'5"–6'0"). Bodies marked by scars earned in service, disciplined and functional.

Physiology: Practical but extensive augmentation — reinforced skeletal lattice, synthetic muscle weaves, neural combat interfaces, and partial pain regulators. Their reflexes and endurance far surpass the Ash-Born, yet remain beneath the divine lethality of the Vardengard or the refined command of the High Blood. Sensory enhancements are disciplined and practical: sharpened hearing tuned to battlefield cues (though dulled against extreme frequencies to preserve focus), retinal overlays for low-light clarity and targeting, and limited olfactory/taste augmentation primarily for hazard detection rather than primal tracking. Soldiers excel through trained coordination and experience, not raw instinct.

Societal Role: Infantry, specialists, and junior officers. They form the living wall and the striking spear of the Order. Individuality is permitted only insofar as it serves the House and the Council. Loyalty is absolute. Hesitation is heresy.

Handlers (The Bridle – Instruments of Control)
Specialized officers tasked with managing and commanding Vardengard when Generals or House leaders are not present. Selected for exceptional psychological insight and iron will.

Physical Characteristics: Balanced and commanding frames (males 5'10"–7'0", females 5'6"–6'2").

Physiology: Augmentations focused on communication, observation, and dominance. Advanced neural interfaces allow simultaneous tracking and command of multiple Vardengard units. Enhanced cognitive processing permits anticipation of behavioral patterns, rapid issuance of binding orders, and real-time behavioral correction. They possess no absolute mystical dominion, but their augmentations and training grant practical mastery sufficient for mission success.

Societal Role: They ensure the living weapons of the Order remain leashed to purpose. Handlers bridge the gap between the divine instruments and the broader Lattice, maintaining efficiency without the full authority of Generals.

Generals (The Apex Command – Sovereign Voices of the Pantheon)
The supreme military and strategic authorities of the Order.

Physical Characteristics: Imposing and refined through selective breeding and augmentation (males 6'5"–7'5", females 6'0"–7'0").

Physiology: Near-total conversion for the highest ranks. Advanced neural interfaces permit simultaneous command of multiple Vardengard and battlefield elements. Tactical overlays provide real-time analysis. Enhanced cognition, extended lifespan, and Vardengard-specific dominion protocols grant near-instant coordination, motivation, and control. Physical augmentations allow them to endure prolonged campaigns and environmental extremes while maintaining strategic clarity.

Societal Role: Interpreters of divine will on the field of war, supreme commanders, and lawmakers of the Order. They live in calculated and necessary austerity so that their minds remain clear for the great work of governance and purification. Their word carries the weight of near-law.

Non-Officer Nobles / High Blood (The Prophets – Living Embodiments of the Pantheon)
Councilors, senior administrators, and bloodlines that directly support the Lattice but do not hold battlefield command.

Physical Characteristics: Refined and imposing (males 6'2"–7'0", females 5'10"–6'6").

Physiology: Cognitive and physical enhancements for leadership, strategy, endurance, and complex coordination. These augmentations sustain long-term governance, logistical mastery, and doctrinal purity without the Vardengard-specific command suite reserved for Generals.

Societal Role: They maintain the social, cultural, and operational stability of the Order. They do not claim to be gods — they are the chosen prophets and instruments through which the Celestarch Pantheon speaks and acts.

Vardengard (The Reforged Weapons – Instruments of Divine Will)
The Vardengard stand apart as the Order’s living weapons. They are not born — they are forged. Selected from the most promising Praevecti stock, they undergo total reforging through the most brutal conditioning, genetic selection, and surgical augmentation known to the Lattice. They exist only to serve, to kill, and to die at the command of their masters.

Physical Characteristics: Towering and formidable (males 7'0"–8'2", females 6'8"–7'6"). Bodies heavily augmented and scarred by ritual branding, combat, and the reforging process itself. Many bear ritual chains, muzzles, or restraint collars when not actively deployed. Females are exceedingly rare — strategic treasures of the highest order — and are treated with even stricter ritual oversight.

Physiology: Complete biomechanical conversion. Synthetic chassis reinforcement, enhanced predatory senses far beyond standard Praevecti augmentation, retractable blades, hyper-lethal muscle weaves, accelerated healing factors, and neural overrides that bind them to their bonded pair and handler. Their physiology is deliberately pushed to the edge of humanity and beyond — pain is suppressed only when it serves the mission; loyalty is chemically and ritually enforced. They operate exclusively in sacred pairs, bonded through shared suffering, violence, and ritual dominance. This bond creates a terrifying synergy in combat but renders them dependent upon absolute external control.

Societal Role: They are not companions, nor beloved wolves, nor honored guardians. They are divine instruments — living weapons granted only to Councilors and Generals of the Pillar Houses. Deployed under strict command, they are unleashed as instruments of terror and overwhelming lethality. Outside of battle they are often muzzled, chained, or kept in controlled isolation. Victory brings ritual exaltation; failure, defiance, or weakness leads to swift and merciless purging. They exist solely to serve the will of the Pantheon through the Council. Nothing more.

General Notes on Praevecti Physiology
All strains remain fundamentally human and capable of interbreeding, though blood purity is obsessively screened and maintained. Augmentations are granted strictly according to station, proven worth, and the needs of the Order. The Order does not compensate for frailty with comfort or luxury. It compensates through iron discipline, ritual obedience, collective sacrifice, and the certainty that every soul exists only to serve the greater lattice.

No Praevecti seeks to become more than human for vanity. They seek only to become perfect instruments — vessels refined, tested, and offered to the will of the Pantheon and the Council.

Let every strain know its place.

Let every soul understand its purpose.

Let the weak be culled, the strong be tempered, and the unworthy be offered to the fire.

The Lattice endures only through perfect order.

The Pantheon demands it.

The Council enforces it.

The Order is it.

Part II – The Eternal Lattice
Governance, Upbringing, Faith, and the Sacred Order

The Order does not govern by the whims of men. It governs by the will of the Celestarch Pantheon, interpreted through the sacred Council and executed through the unbreakable chain of Houses and enclaves. There is no democracy, no false equality, no indulgent softness. There is only hierarchy, oath, and divine mandate. This is the Lattice — rigid, eternal, and pure.

Structure of Upbringing – The Crucible of the Institute
Children of the Order are not raised in the weakness of familial indulgence. From the age of five they are separated from blood-kin and delivered into the Institute, where they are stripped of name, softness, and illusion. There they become Recruits — raw ore to be assayed, tempered, or discarded.

Their lives are one continuous ordeal: ceaseless martial training, doctrinal indoctrination, genetic re-evaluation, ritual surveillance, and labor in the fields and forges. Weakness is not corrected; it is culled. Those who fail the Institute’s trials are not executed outright, but reassigned to menial civilian service, forever marked as lesser. Only the strong, the obedient, and the pure advance.

From birth until five, every child undergoes mandatory genetic and aptitude screening. The strong, the pure, and the exceptional are marked for the Institute — the highest expression of the Order’s discernment and dedication to the divine. Selection is no gift. It is a summons to sacrifice.

At twenty-one, survivors face the Final Ordeal — a deadly trial of body, mind, and will. Those who emerge swear the Ashen Vow and are sorted into their proper station according to proven merit. The Institute is not a school. It is a crucible. Most who enter will never leave as Praevecti.

Governance – The Voice of the Gods
The Order is ruled by the High Council, a cloistered conclave of thirteen whose decrees are treated as divine revelation. From their mountain-fastness of Regnum Caeli, carved into the alpine highlands of Central Europe where earth rises closest to the heavens, they weave prophecy and policy alike. Their chosen mouthpiece, the Monarch, speaks to the wider Order with the authority of the gods themselves.

The capital, Regnum Caeli, stands as an impregnable fortress of black stone and gilded scripture. At its heart rises the Iron Bastion — both throne and temple — where the Council convenes, sacred doctrine is inscribed upon eternal stone, and the will of the Pantheon is made manifest. Though the Order maintains enclaves and holdings across continents, Regnum Caeli remains inviolate: cradle, holy ground, and the beating heart of genetic, doctrinal, and martial purity.

Power flows thus:
High Council (doctrine and revelation) → Major Houses and Generals (military execution) → Sworn Enclaves and Lesser Houses (specialization and support).

Beliefs & Religion – The Celestarch Pantheon
The Order stands as guardian of the ancient Astralic Covenant, forged in cosmic order and human supremacy. Devotion to the Celestarch Twelve remains the bedrock of all life. Hymns, blood offerings, stone tablets, astral omens, and ritual trial guide every oath, every campaign, and every breath.

  • Humanity as Supreme: Mankind is chosen above all other life, tasked to embody the virtues of the Celestarch and perfect itself through fire and discipline.

  • The Voice of the Gods: The Council alone interprets divine law; their judgments are the will of the Celestarch made flesh.

  • Perfection Through Trial: Every rite, every Ordeal, every battlefield is a crucible of ascension.

  • No Afterlife, Only Legacy: The dead endure only in memory and the deeds left behind, honored through offerings and the continuation of the Lattice.

Each enclave honors particular deities according to local tradition, yet all remain bound beneath the Council’s singular interpretation.

The Celestarch Twelve
The gods were shaped from astral fire and voidstone, embodying cosmic forces and ancestral virtues. They rarely intervene directly; their will manifests through omens, dreams, constellations, and the success of the worthy.

Rituals & Festivals
The Order’s year is structured by sacred observances that bind the soul to the Pantheon and the Lattice.

  • Winter Festival (Mid-January): Honors sustenance and creation through craft, hunt, music, and lantern-lit resonance.

  • Summer Festival (Late June): Celebrates abundance, innovation, and naval might with processions, new works, and fertility rites.

  • Fall Festival (Late September): Contemplates death, ancestral wisdom, and prudent preparation.

  • Judgment & War Day (Variable): Reenacts trials and martial feats in honor of Astraea Veridion, Valkarion, and Valroth Kyr.

Additional rites include the Trial of Fire, the Ashen Vow, the Silent Vigil, the First Hunt, and the Silver Trial. Each reinforces loyalty, skill, and divine order.

Culture & Society of the Order
The Rigid Class System
Praevectus society is built upon unyielding hierarchy. Lineage, martial achievement, genetic purity, and proven loyalty determine station. There is no illusion of equality.

At the apex sit the Councilors and the Monarch. Beneath them stand the Heads of Major Houses — Generals treated as sovereigns, their children addressed as princes and princesses. Officers follow in strict chain: Lieutenant Generals, Colonels, Majors, Captains.

Civilians sustain the Lattice through labor and service. At the bottom are the Failures of the Institute — those consigned to servile roles, indentured labor, or perpetual low station.

Wealth exists, but it is secondary to power, reputation, and proximity to the divine mandate. To rise is possible through merit and sacrifice. To fall is swift and final.

Diet & Nutrition
Food is sacred fuel, not pleasure. Meals are regimented, nutrient-dense, and adapted to regional enclaves: hearty smoked meats and roots in the North, fried staples and sauces in Southern holdings, seafood and preserved harvests along the coasts. High-protein regimens, seasonal vegetables, and specialized tonics sharpen mind and body. Every portion is measured. Every meal is ritualized — a daily reminder that the body belongs to the Order.

Currency & Bartering
The Order recognizes no independent currency. Externally the U.S. dollar facilitates trade. Internally, reputation, service, and contribution govern all distribution of resources, housing, training, and privilege. Bartering and favors flow according to trust and proven worth. Social standing outweighs coin in every matter of consequence.

Social Norms & Etiquette
Titles are observed with precision. Children of Generals and Councilors receive formal deference. Loyalty to House and Order is absolute — betrayal invites public shaming, exile, or ritual purification. Public conduct demands discipline, humility before superiors, and iron resolve. Excessive pride or indulgence is impurity, even among the High Blood.

Let every soul know its place.

Let every day be an offering.

Let every breath serve the Lattice.

The Order does not merely endure.

It purifies.

It ascends.

It endures forever.

Part III – The Chain of Command
Military Culture and the Sacred Strata of Service

The Order does not possess an army. It is an army. Every soul within the Lattice exists to serve the will of the Celestarch Pantheon through the Council. There is no equality of station, only degrees of obedience. From the moment a child enters the Institute until the day their ashes feed the forges, each Praevectus is measured, tested, and placed where they may best serve the greater purification.

Military Culture
Military service is not a calling — it is the defining essence of Praevectus identity. Every citizen, from the lowliest Ash-Born to the highest General, is forged with martial discipline. Honor is not found in personal glory or brute strength, but in flawless execution of duty, unyielding strategy, and absolute loyalty to the Lattice. Generals and officers bear the dual burden of command and mentorship, ensuring House cohesion and doctrinal purity. Elite units, especially the Vardengard, operate under codes of absolute secrecy and controlled lethality, deployed only where the Order’s dominance must be enforced without hesitation or mercy.

Recruits – The Unproven (The Clay of the Institute)
From the age of five, children of the Order are taken from their families and delivered to the Institute. There they are stripped of name, family, and illusion. They become Recruits — raw material to be shaped or discarded.

Their lives are one continuous ordeal: ceaseless training, doctrinal indoctrination, genetic testing, ritual surveillance, and labor. Weakness is not corrected; it is culled. Those who fail the Institute’s trials are reassigned to menial civilian service, forever marked as lesser. Only the strong, the obedient, and the pure advance.

The Institute is not a school. It is a crucible. Most who enter will never leave as Praevecti.

Praevecti Proper (The Tempered – The Living Blade)
Those who survive the Final Ordeal at twenty-one and swear the Ashen Vow earn the title Praevecti. They become the living body of the Order — soldiers, scholars, administrators, artisans, and laborers.

They are bound by oath to House and Council. Their lives are not their own. They own little, aspire only to service, and find meaning in disciplined contribution. Whether marching in the ranks or laboring in the forges, every Praevectus knows their place in the Lattice. Individuality is tolerated only when it strengthens the whole.

They are the hands that build, the feet that march, and the blood that feeds the machine of purification.

Vardengard – The Reforged Weapons (Instruments of Divine Violence)
The Vardengard are not soldiers. They are sacred weapons. Selected from the most promising Praevecti stock, they undergo total reforging — body, mind, and will. They operate exclusively in bonded pairs, shadows of one another, linked through shared suffering and ritual dominance.

They are assigned only to Councilors and Generals of the Major Houses. Outside of battle they are often muzzled, chained, or kept in controlled isolation. In combat they are unleashed as living instruments of terror.

The Order does not love them as some traitorous offshoots might. They are tools — exalted only in victory, discarded or purged the moment they falter. Their handlers maintain control through calculated dominance, never affection. A Vardengard that resists is not corrected. It is unmade.

Praetorians – The Iron Fist (Enforcers of Internal Purity)
The Praetorians are the Order’s unblinking eye and merciless hand. Chosen for absolute loyalty and ruthless efficiency, they serve as judge, jury, and executioner within the Lattice.

They wield near-absolute authority to maintain internal order. Public floggings, midnight arrests, brutal interrogations, and summary executions are their tools. Even Generals and High Blood bow before a Praetorian’s decree, for their word carries the weight of the Council’s will made manifest.

To be judged by a Praetorian is to stand naked before the Order itself.

Sagittarians – The Unseen Blades (Assassins and Infiltrators)
The Sagittarians are the Order’s shadows. Masters of stealth, deception, poisons, disguise, and psychological warfare, they strike before the enemy even knows war has begun.

Trained for years in secrecy, they specialize in reconnaissance, targeted elimination, sabotage, and the quiet removal of threats. Where Vardengard are brute force, Sagittarians are precision. They are the ghosts that walk behind enemy lines and leave only silence and corpses in their wake.

Horkosians – The Tormentors of the Pit (Breakers of Flesh and Will)
Named for the oaths they extract and the curses they embody, the Horkosians are the Order’s specialists in suffering. Within the black stone depths of the Pit, they practice the sacred arts of breaking minds and bodies.

Their work is a union of science, ritual cruelty, and doctrinal necessity. Prisoners are unmade, confessions carved from flesh, and experiments conducted to better understand the limits of the impure. To fall into Horkosian hands is to become a living testament to the Order’s truth: suffering is the only honest path to revelation, and no soul leaves the Pit unbroken.

Let every rank know its place.

Let every soul understand its purpose.

Let the weak be culled, the strong be tempered, and the unworthy be offered to the fire.

The Lattice endures only through perfect order.

The Pantheon demands it.

The Council enforces it.

The Order is it.

Part IV – The Sacred Lattice of Authority
Houses, Oaths, and the Chain of Divine Command

The Order of the Praevecti is not held together by numbers alone, but by binding oaths, ritual authority, and divine sanction. Power flows downward from the High Council Houses, through the Pillar (Major) Houses, and into the numerous Lesser Houses that sustain the Order’s reach across the world. This is the unbreakable Lattice — sworn in blood, tempered by trial, and sanctified by the Celestarch Pantheon.

The High Council Houses
The Thirteen High Houses form the ruling Council of the Order. They do not maintain personal standing armies. Instead, they command through doctrine, law, ritual, and the sworn loyalty of the Pillar Houses. Each Council House is entitled to one or two Vardengard as symbols of office and instruments of divine will.

The Pillar Houses (The Sword of the Order)
The military, political, and cultural engines of the Order. Each is led by a General who swears fealty to one or more Council Houses. They maintain their own populations, forces, and infrastructure, and hold authority over multiple Lesser Houses. Each Pillar House General is entitled to Vardengard assigned directly to their command.

Pillar Houses & Their Sworn Lesser Houses

  • House Tiberius – Heavy infantry, honor guards, shock formations Sworn Lesser Houses: Drakonis, Korvin, Raveldan

  • House Dain – Logistics warfare, rapid coordination Sworn Lesser Houses: Tallister, Edraline, Ventaris

  • House Aurellius – Diplomacy, intelligence, political maneuvering Sworn Lesser Houses: Jastera, Sylvarm, Coranth

  • House Tarsa – Reconnaissance, infiltration, long-range operations Sworn Lesser Houses: Taelmarch, Nyxara, Estravon

  • House Malcor – War-beasts, xenobiology Sworn Lesser Houses: None permanent (attached detachments only)

Lesser Houses
Specialist lineages led by Colonels or Majors. They do not sit on the Council, nor field independent strategic forces. They provide niche capabilities and are sworn by blood-oath, contract, or ancient lineage to one of the Pillar Houses. Their strength lies in specialization, not dominance.

Vardengard – Instruments of Divine Violence
Living weapons of the Order. Total Order-wide: ~270. Assigned only to Councilors and Pillar House Generals. Never owned by Lesser Houses. A single bonded pair may outweigh an entire battalion in strategic value. They serve as battlefield deterrents, executioners, and symbols of divine sanction. Packs are a last resort, reserved for the gravest threats.

Doctrine of Power
The Council commands.

The Pillars move.

The Lesser Houses endure.

The strength of the Praevectus does not lie in chaos, but in structure — a lattice of sworn blood, ritual duty, and divine judgment that has endured for centuries.

Strength of the Order
Population & Strategic Capacity

The Order of the Praevectus is sustained not only by faith and doctrine, but by the scale of its sworn populations. These figures reflect the approximate recorded strength of the Order during this era, as maintained by House Tallister under Council oversight.

Order-Wide Population
Total Population: ~8.5 million souls

  • Civilians (The Ash-Born): ~4.6 million

  • Military Personnel (The Tempered Host): ~3.9 million

The Order favors precision, discipline, and doctrinal cohesion over raw numerical dominance.

Pillar Houses – Population Estimates

  • House Tiberius: ~1.3 million

  • House Dain: ~1.2 million

  • House Aurellius: ~1.15 million

  • House Sergei: ~0.95 million

  • House Tarsa: ~0.85 million

  • House Solis: ~0.65 million

  • House Vrex: ~0.45 million

  • House Rhemion: ~0.40 million

  • House Kane: ~0.35 million

  • House Malcor: ~0.32 million

  • House Varonn: ~0.30 million

  • House Elystra: ~0.28 million

High Council Houses
Combined populations (clerics, ritual authorities, archivists, adjudicators, and attendants): ~120,000–150,000. Their power is expressed through doctrine, law, oath-bound military authority, and divine sanction.

Vardengard Distribution
High Council Allocation: ~22 Vardengard

Pillar Houses Assigned: ~220 Vardengard (with Tiberius, Dain, Aurellius, and Tarsa holding the highest concentrations)

Strategic Reserve: ~28 Vardengard (under direct Council authority for training, recovery, black-site operations, and emergency redeployment)

No Lesser House permanently holds Vardengard. Requests must pass through their sworn Pillar House and receive Council sanction.

Notes on Military Organization
House Leadership: Generals command Pillar Houses; high-ranking officers manage Lesser Houses.

Deployment Philosophy: The Order focuses on precision, elite units, and divine guidance rather than overwhelming numbers.

Vardengard as Strategic Assets: Even the smallest pair can shift the outcome of critical operations.

Let every House know its place.

Let every oath be iron.

Let every Vardengard serve without question.

The Lattice endures only through perfect order.

The Pantheon demands it.

The Council enforces it.

The Order is it.
